About You
30
years from now....
Its
the year
2036 and you're sitting at
home on the first day of your retirement. As you look around the house
you smile and feel hugely grateful for what you've achieved during your
career. The last 30 years of your career seem to have flown past.
There's no doubt that its been a bit of a rollercoaster ride but its
been fun & very rewarding.
- You've been
lucky enough to work with some of the brightest minds in your field
- You've now
recognised as one
of
the leading contributors in your profession over
the last 30
years
- You've
written books & spoken at more conferences than you can remember
- You've
coached and mentored 100's of other people to achieve much greater
success in their lives.
- You built
income streams from multiple sources
that protected you &
your family during the big dips in the economy.
- You've made
life long friends who live in countries all over the world.
- Most
importantly, you've
got no regrets.
Every
major goal that you've set out for yourself over the past 30 years you
have achieved.
You close your eyes and
let your mind
drift back to the year 2006. You remember this year well because it was
at that point that your career reached a
cross roads. The
career that you'd
started to build
during your twenties wasn't the one that you wanted to follow for the
rest of your life. It was time for a change. It was time to start
getting serious about building a career around the
values
that were most
important to me.
Back
in 2006, you wondered how on earth you managed to make sense of
everything that was happening around you
More
& more jobs were being outsourced to other countries. You weren't worried
initially because
you didn't think it would affect you. However, as more and more non
customer facing roles started to be outsourced your view started to
change.
The
opportunities
for career development
within the large organisation that you were working for seemed
to have vanished.
"Downsizing" & "Rightsizing" were the buzz words at the time.
Even
trying to get seemingly straightforward projects completed at work was
becoming impossible as the organisation seemed to change strategy every
5 minutes.
You
remember that the
smartest decision which I made in 2006 was to focus on really
building the one
thing that no one could outsource, or downsize or rightsize. That one
thing being YOU.
There
was a book that you read at the time that talked about how the
professional of the 21st would work much more independently than they
had in the 20th century.
Technologies such as Broadband meant that professionals didn't need to
work in an office for 8 hours a day.
Suddenly,
more & more professionals were quitting
their jobs and
starting their own "work from home" businesses. You remember that this
seemed appealing
at the time as you trudged your way through another day in the office.
However, you were smart enough to know that for every person that made
a success of their small business
there
would be 4 or 5
that
didn't.
The
question that kept nagging at the back of your head at the time was
"what do I need to do to make sure I'm one of the few who really
succeed as an independent professional?" After having a short
brainstorm the
actions that you needed to take became
clearer.
- I'll need to
build
a
strong network of contacts
that I can use to build & sustain
my career
- In need to
clearly identify what
makes me unique.
- I'll need to improve
my communication skills as
these will help me to build stronger
relationships with the people important to me.
- I need to be more
visible so that people
recognise what I do
- I need to
have clearer
short, medium & long term goals
so that I stay focused &
motivated when times get tough
30 years on &
with a great career
behind you, it was easy to forget how important identifying &
completing these action had been in shaping your success. It had taken
a lot of patience & perseverance to reach some of your longer
term
goals and there had been plenty of bumps along the way.
However,
the key to successful navigating all the peaks & troughs had
been
your focus
on consistently building your profile (or Personal Brand as it was
called back in 2006).
Focusing on taking the actions necessary to stand out from all the
other people who were trying to achieve similar goals to yourself.
Yes,
there was no doubt that identifying Personal Branding and the
people that could help you build your brand was probably the biggest
key to your success over the last 30 years. Ultimately it was taking
actions every single day to build your brand that had made the
difference.
30
Year from now....
Will
you be sitting back 30 years from now reflecting on your career with a
broad smile of contentment on your face or will you be still
be struggling to pay off your debts, wondering where things
went wrong?
If
your a
professional in your 20's or 30's the reality is that
the next 30 years
of your career and your life are going to be filled with more
uncertainty and more change than ever faced your parents. Yes, this is
a massive generalisation. However, the support structures that have
helped professionals to work in the same company for 5, 10 or 15 years
are fast disappearing. You
need to take more responsibility for your success in life & not
leave things to chance
The
question is, what actions must you take today in order to make sure
your not trapped in a career that is taking you nowhere. What
actions must you take to make sure that you achieve the financial
&
material goals that you have for yourself and your family?
